Operating instructions for the cultivation of Shiitake and Oyster Mushrooms on logs:
Requisites:
- freshly cut logs of deciduous trees
- plugs with the mycelium of the choosen mushroom
- 1 plastic sheet or large bag
- an electric drill
1. Substrate selection:
Choose freshly cut (max. 3 weeks) logs of deciduous trees with a diameter of 10 to 100 cm. Older stems are either too dry, or may contain undesired molds.
2. Substrate preparation:
Drill holes with the same diameter as the plugs all over the stem, at intervals of + 15 cm.
3. Inoculation:
Fill each of the holes up with a mycelium-plug. For an average log of 10-15 cm wide and 50 cm long, one needs ± 10 plugs.
4. Incubation:
Wrap the logs up with plastic, and keep them in the dark at 20-25 °C. The stems will be covered with white mycelium after 4 to 10 months, depending on the mushroom species, type of wood and log-size.
5. Fructification:
Place the logs outside, protected from direct sunlight and wind. In humid periods, when temperatures lay between 5 an 20 °C, mushrooms will appear spontaneously. This may happen 3 to 5 times every year, during 3 to 5 years (extensive growing method).
